Paris (France), October 30, 2003

Dear colleagues,

My call sign is F6FQX and I have been an ARRL member for years.

Visiting recently Burgundy, the French province where my family is from, I discovered, not very far from Chablis, the small village of Chevroches (“in English, “Goat-rocks”).

Its tiny church, located in “rue de l’enfer” (in English, “Hell Street”), built in the year 843, is devoted, like all roman catholic churches, to a holy man

But in that special village the church holy man is named Saint Amateur.

Who knows that our hobby could lead to beatitude ?

One more stone to the debate on "should we continue to be designated as amateurs ?"

You will find hereattached the pictures I took there (church, street-tag, explaining label on the church both in French and English, the church window representing Saint-Amateur). Maybe one of them could interest QST Up Front ?

We can imagine that Saint Amateur was a very good DX-(holy)man, specializing in the sky-wave utilization…

But, even in that very old times, neighbourhood problems did exist for hams.

Maybe the street of this OM was therefore designated “hell street” ?

With my best 73.

Jean-Pierre Bourdier, F6FQX

RE: Saint Amateur was a holy man living in Burgundy

Jean-Pierre,

Thank you very much for the photos and story about Chevroches and St Amateur. I will try to find a place for it in an upcoming "Up Front in QST" column.

Thank you, too, for your long-time support of the ARRL via your membership.
